Interview with Fausto Pinarello: bikes, design, style… and a successful life in the cycling industry
At the end of a discussion with Fausto Pinarello the chairman of ‘Cicli Pinarello’ explained his dream scenario: “Everyone in the world needs to ride bikes.” After a life in the cycling trade, he doesn’t say this because of a need to sell more of bikes bearing the Pinarello name. We didn’t talk about money, but it’s fair to say the son of the company founder has done okay after 43 years in the business. Rather, his hope for a world of cyclists stems from the knowledge that riding a bike is something wonderful.
This interview was recorded on a day packed with activities high in the Dolomite Mountains that included a short ride on the new Pinarello Dogma F. Again, there was no script but we share a love of cycling and fine bikes to the conversation flowed with ease.
Click ‘play’ and get Fausto Pinarello’s thoughts on the future of bike design, the importance of aesthetics (to his brand in particular, as he admits without hesitation), and a range of other topics.
- Rob

Story of my ride: Cycling in Sydney with my son, interlude from my Visit Italy series (to Akuna Bay)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.День тому
After a month in Italy it was time to get back on the bike again in Sydney. My son, Louis, came along with me for my first ride in a while… and so I captured a few moments from this bit of #FamilyTime while cycling and exploring our town. We managed much of the 100km loop - from the city to Akuna Bay and back - on bike paths… and it's pleasing to note that things are steadily getting better for...
2024 Pinarello Dogma F pre-launch: series intro - first look, short ride at offical launch in Italy

My inspiration for the trip to Italy was to ride a bike. That is the reason for what turned into a month-long adventure in Europe. It helped that Pinarello was inviting media from around the world for a sneak preview shortly before the official launch of the Dogma F bike late in June 2024. This video serves as an intro / prologue, a preview of the Visiting Italy series. Some has already been up...
Story of a bike shop: Max Brusa at Bike Empire (Bologna, Italy) - unique cycling exotica

Take a look inside Bike Empire in Bologna. This is far from a typical Local Bike Shop. Max Brusa and his crew showed me around their ‘LBS’ on the day the Tour de France was in town… I met Max the evening before the TDF arrived in Bologna. The bike he was riding served as the catalyst for an introduction. Less than a minute after crossing the road to take a closer look at what I would later lear...

Robbie is now on Eurosport Cycling channel on UA-cam. So Excited! Totally agree with all the positive comments. He is such a gem. I raced against him in 1992. He won the Uni of QLD first stage of three stage tour. Extremely steep hill to finish. I got a flat well before. But like me, Robbie was one of two A-grade riders that had humility to ask Gavin Young what gear to use for the hill. It was insane. Robbie first stage. In a surprise, and I never know why - but I admired it - Robbie launched a kamikaze solo on the second stage. What I admired was the guts. There was no way that could succeed, but the attitude was right (ride boldly), he went all the way in the sport didn’t he. People that are humble learn so much more than people who are proud. Robbie has worked for everything he has got. And he deserves to speak knowledgeably when he speaks, because you instantly know he knows. When he speaks it is like he is taking you in the race. A great sadness was the loss around this time of Darren Smith - the great mate of Robbie - and I called him The Little Master, imagining in the status of Sir Hubert Opperman, just exceptional talent, judgement, and all-round at such a young age. Such a tragedy to lose him. I would have loved to have sprinted against Robbie (and obviously lost) but my mate Marcel who I could beat and who did sprint against Robbie said merely “HE’S RAPID”. Classic. Two words. No chance. Like Robbie’s kick. That says it all. And it is great to see he has such good and down to earth friends as Rob Arnold. Thank you. Rob for sticking up for Robbie. It is such a STUPID decision. What on earth were they thinking. They are like gold miner who are throwing gold away like dirt and saying “Oh, we are going in a different direction.” No you’re not. You’re punctured, lost and losing, and so far from home, don’t know front from rear, you haven’t got a clue what you are doing. SBS broadcasts now are crap. All they had to do was smile. Now they are are just full or ads. The race was theirs to lose. The TOUR DE FRANCE. An icon of world culture. It is a race but it is both this and much more. It is jae ne sas qua, a certain indefineable something. An experience! My friends and family literally plan their year around to watch, and gather round. It transports you. If not in Paris themselves, on a regular basis, we at least have the tour and the mute button. SBS however may as well be on Mars. They don’t even have the food guy. No taste. Honey, please turn up the music. Paris is so beautiful this time of year.

Ah... this is the only Checkpoint I've ridden but I've used the Domane, so I'll offer my view on the IsoSpeed...: frankly, minimal gains, maximum hassle. It does offer a bit of extra comfort but I don't really see the point of making what could be a far more classic looking back so... ah, clunky. IsoSpeed seems like an interesting notion but tyre innovation - tubeless, larger sizes, etc - negates the need for the complexity of the concept that was dreamed up years ago. I can't see Trek persisting with it much longer to be honest. Hope that helps. - Rob

Yep, signage writers / installers / designers in Australia seriously need to rethink the approach taken. If the effort is made to highlight a direction, at least highlight it in a useful way. It can be laughable... until it gets cyclists (or other road users for that matter) in a dangerous predicament. - Rob

That sucks that the power and chainrings are integrated. Stupid idea to integrate the power meter as well. So you need new chainrings and throw away a perfectly good power meter!!

This is why I mountain bike and prefer the forests and dirt . And I don’t want to end up being stressed, cynical, angry and in unsafe situations dealing with motorists. Sydney will only get worse for cyclists as we have politicians obsessed with more growth and immigration.
